Coifs were already worn in the 12th century, there is evidenced by numerous contemporary illustrations. In the European Middle Ages, wearing headgear was extremely common practice. Headwear of any kind was offered cover the heads of children, women and men of the lower classes if they could afford it, but it was also worn (in padded form) by warriors under a chainmail coif or a helmet armour.
