Beowulf is the oldest surviving epic poem based in Old English and is commonly cited as one of the most important works of Anglo-Saxon literature. The full poem survives in the manuscript known as the Nowell Codex and is located in the British Library. It was written in England around the 8th and 11th century. The manuscript was badly damaged in 1731 in a fire at Ashburnham House where it was held along with a collection of other medieval manuscripts.
